UMP Won 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze Medals in Intervarsity Sports Championship 2017
Skudai, 3 April – A total of 20 FKKSA UMP students participated in the Intervarsity Sports Championship 2017 held in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Skudai, Johor. The event was organized by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AiChE) UTM Chapter which began on the 31st of March and ended on 3rd of April 2017.There were nine events in the championship: ping pong, badminton, volleyball, netball, basketball, futsal, sepak takraw, Dota 2 and FIFA 2017. In this year’s championship, the FKKSA UMP team managed to win the third place in the overall standing with 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals. The overall champion of this year’s event went to the host, UTM.
According to the advisor to CHEST FKKSA UMP, Dr Mohd Faizal Ali, participants, especially FKKSA UMP athletes showed a high level of fighting spirit and sportsmanship throughout the championship. He added that such event would be meaningful to students in an effort to produce a generation of holistic graduates who would not only excel academically but also in co-curricular activities. “The involvement of students in sports activities like these would help to expand their level of networking with students from other universities in Malaysia. Apart from that, it would encourage healthy lifestyle in line with the aspiration of the University which can give positive effects on the individual and also on the organization” he said. Meanwhile, the team captain Muhammad Fazly bin Razali expressed his satisfaction over the commitment and fighting spirit shown by all FKKSA UMP athletes who participated in this year’s event.
This year’s participation was successful in finding and showcasing new talents as well as improving the skills of existing talents. In addition, students were able to participate in the championship in a healthy competition in one of the eight core sports in Malaysia (i.e., badminton, bowling, gymnastics, aquatics, hockey, squash, athletics and football). Students did not only compete among themselves and show their talents in the championship but also shared ideas and exchange views about the universities in Malaysia in terms of academic matters as well as co-curricular activities.
